Some time ago, we discussed briefly the meaning of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Today, we’ll be going in-dept and talking about The Baptism of the Holy Ghost and How to receive Him.
What is Holy Ghost baptism? Baptism is an action that suggests a total immersion. John's water baptism was for repentance and a preparation for the spiritual baptism.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit may be defined as that work whereby the Spirit of God places the believer into union with Christ and into union with other believers in the body of Christ at the moment of salvation. The Baptism with the Holy Ghost first occurred on the day of Pentecost following the ascension. This is a New Testament phenomenon; there are instances of those in the Old Testament that were filled with the Holy Ghost, but never a total baptism.
Is the baptism in the Holy Ghost open for all or are there conditions for access? One thing I love about the scripture is that what God said to one, He says to all.
1. You must be born again - John 3:3 “why we always mention the issue of being born again over and over is that “It is the solid foundation Jesus refered to as a House built on a rock” There is a level of the spirit you will never attain until you totally submit and Accept Christ as your Lord and saviour. See our Salvation Page for details. “For the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” - I Corin 2:14
2. You must have a burning thirst – Until you have a burning desire for the things of the spirit, you might likely not receive it. “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” Matt 5:6. “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) - John 7:37-39.
3. You must ask in faith: Luke 11:11-13.
4. You must believe that you have received – After asking in faith, you need to believe that you have received the baptism of the holy ghost. You might not feel anything but just believe. “Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” - Mark 11:24. Notice that word “believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them not ye shall feel them”
5. You must open your mouth and speak as the spirit gives you utterance – “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” - Acts 2:4. You need to speak and leave the giving of the utterances to the Holy Ghost. Just speak; it might sound like baby tongue at first but the more you speak, the more clear your tongue is. Psalm 81:10b says “open thy mouth wide and I will fill it” So, open your mouth wide!
